A 2 day Workshop on the use AGRO-ICT Modules for enhanced Agricultural Production

In his welcome address to the participants, Registrar of NIAS Prof. E. A. Iyayi gave a brief background about how the workshop came about. He said the Institute was opportune to attend two (2) programs organized by the resource persons last year on Agro-ICT. Further discussions ensued, which led to signing of memorandum of understanding between Dilimson holdings ltd and NIAS, this gave birth to the workshop. In addition he said, Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have the potential to transform agriculture and bring about economic growth. The organization of the workshop was timely and aimed at providing solution to re-occurring challenges of clashes between herdsmen & crop farmers and cattle rustling.
Animal Identification and Census of livestock resource in Nigeria he said is critical for planning and development of the sector. However, it requires multidimensional approach that was why the Institute invited relevant stakeholders to the workshop for their expert opinion. He implored participants to contribute to the discussions and proffer solutions.
Thereafter the Registrar Professor E.A. Iyayi invited the NIAS Council President to present his opening remarks.
In his Opening remarks, President of NIAS Prof. I F. Adu stated that Education and Agriculture are critical sectors which deserve attention for prosperity and development of Nigeria.
The resource persons are Agro-ICT solution providers in agriculture he asserted. Partnership with these experts he said is invaluable in research, planning and problem solving. Therefore, he called on the participants to pay rapt attention during the presentations.
The Permanent Secretary Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development goodwill message at the occasion was read by Director Department of Animal Husbandry Services Mr. John T. Taiwo who later declared the workshop opened.
The first presentation was made by Mr. Meyer Walter. He spoke about the use of Agro-ICT Satellite Modules (ProGIS Software GMBh) for forests inventory using softwares like DokuPlant, ForestOffice and WinGIS which can generate images like Orthoimage, Orthoretification, and sentinel images. The model is managed with Geographic Information System (GIS) + maps base on orthoimages. DokuPlant enables the use of Global Positioning System (GPS).
The second presentation on Animal Identification and Livestock Management was delivered by Dr. Ovidiu Vladu. He said that Animal Identification System is designed to provide solution in Livestock data management system. This includes Identification, Recording, Traceability management and monitoring of Livestock from birth up to the time of slaughter. This can be achieved through an Ear Tag that is carrying a unique identification code hence serve as animal passport. The software can be used in cattle, sheep, goat and pig production
