GOOD MANUFACTURING PRACTICES (GMPs) IN OWERRI, IMO STATE


The workshop in South East took place on March 3, 2017, at Main Conference Hall, Links Hotel, Owerri, Imo State.
Welcome address was presented by Mrs. C.C. Opara, Ag. Director, Department of Livestock services, Imo State Ministry of Agriculture, Environment & Natural Resources, Owerri.
Earlier, the Registrar NIAS, Prof E.A. Iyayi gave the Opening Remarks. In the remark he stated clearly the need for the GMPs workshop and importance of regulating animal science practice in general and feed milling industry in particular. The Registrar went further and gave an overview of feed milling industry in the world
The resource person was Mr. Harry Ifeanyi Njoagwuani from NIAS. Modules presented include:

  1. Overview of Feed Mill Industry.
  2. International Perspective and Importance of Feed Safety.
  3. Opportunities and Challenges in the Global Feed Safety.
  4. Hazards Associated with Animal Feeds.
  5. Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) in the Feed Milling Industry.
  6. Hazard Analysis and Critical Control point (HACCP).

During interaction section some question were entertained, among which were:
What are the functions of NAFDAC, SON and NIAS with respect to feed regulation?
In response, Mr. Emmanuel Suleiman of NAFDAC made it clear that NAFDAC regulates mainly packaged products. Mr. Njoagwuani Harry added that NIAS gives list of approved feed ingredients. While, Mrs Echebiri Comfort of SON said that SON enforces standards.
