Research and Extension
The Department of Research and Extension has over the years harnessed strength of partnership with private and public sectors. These have strengthened stakeholders’ confidence and robust participation in activities of the Institute. The Department believes that the most useful form of knowledge is the one that is available to stakeholders to apply to their activities and also getting feedback from end users.
MANDATES OF RESEARCH AND EXTENSION DEPARTMENT
To promote and coordinate research efforts and other studies for the advancement of any of the aspects or branches of Animal science
To disseminate information relating to research results and modern Animal production skills and technology.
To educate the public on Animal Science activities.
Co-operate or affiliate with any relevant association on Animal production either locally or internationally
To promote all Animal Science activities and welfare of Animals to effect efficient and scientific production
To promote rapid production of high quality Animal proteins through scientific method
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES OF RESEARCH AND EXTENSION
- Dissemination of technical and business information from the Institute to all stakeholders
- Developing and maintaining appropriate data bank of all activities of the Institute
- Publication of NIAS Newsletter, Journals, Magazines and other Educational Materials.
- Monitoring and collation of market issues on livestock and Livestock value chains
- Participating and liaising with all relevant sectors of livestock industry upstream or downstream
- Maintaining effective liaising with NIAS Zonal Offices
- Regular farm/firm visits to dialogue and share information with stakeholders in the livestock Industry
- Participating in relevant activities of NIAS Postgraduate College of Animal Science
- Maintaining effective liaison with Chairmen of Livestock Economics and Marketing, Livestock processing and Preservation Technology, Livestock Extension and Information Technology, Animal Biotechnology, Microlivestock, Wildlife and Forestry and Range and Pasture Science
INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP
The Institute has clear mandate to support production of high quality Animal protein to Nigerian populace through Research. Research and Extension department is working in partnership with Government Agencies and other collaborators such as Academic, Research Institutions and international organizations that are committed to achieving sufficiency in Animal protein. In the year 2015 the Institute reached out to join forces and created Synergies with international partners such as International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF), USAID West African Trade and investment Hub and Ghana Society for Animal Production. These Collaborations gave birth to capacity building workshops for stakeholders in the feedmilling industry in Nigeria. The following were achieved;-
Global Animal Nutrition Programme “Train the trainer”. Implementation of IFIF/FAO manual on good practice for the feed industry. This took place at Sheraton Hotel Lagos on 28- 30 October, 2015. It was sponsored by IFIF.
“Invest in Animal feed workshop” organized by USAID West Africa Trade and Investment in collaboration with the Institute. This took place at Sheraton Hotel Lagos on 19th November 2015.
The Institute also participated in International Stakeholders meeting for the development of harmonized regional regulatory for movement and use of Animal genetic resources within the ECOWAS region. This took place at ARCN Board Room Abuja on 25th December, 2015.

NATIONAL STAKEHOLDERS MEETING
The Institute participated in several stakeholders meeting recently, these include:
Stakeholders’ conference on leather industry on impact of Export Expansion Grant. At Tahir Guest Palace Kano on 17th September 2015.
Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) reform workshop. This took place at Rockview Hotel Abuja on 7-9th December 2015.
Stakeholders meeting on Feed ingredient and Feedmill Quality Audit Check list held at Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority on 27th October, 2015.
Consultative meeting with Department of Animal Production and Husbandry Services and NIAS Animal Physiology Committee held on 22nd January 2016.
Courtesy visit by Executive Secretary and Management team of National Board for Technical Education to the Institute on 14th January, 2016.
National Animal Production Development Committee meeting held at Institute of Agric. Res. And Training Moor Plantation Ibadan on 10- 11th November, 2015.
ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC ENLIGHTENMENT.
In line with Institute’s social mandate, the immediate past Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (Dr. Godwin Oyedele Oyediji) with other stakeholders in the livestock industry were involved in public enlightenment programmes on the challenges of the spread of Avian Influenza and communal clashes between herdsmen and crop farmers. This was executed through Media chat, Press conference and interview which received wide publicity in print and electronic media. The department through the Extension unit organized farm visit to farm/firm as part of our responsibility for Advocacy and data generation.
